The poetic touch of fragile narratives
At first glance, Lee Jinju’s works exude a quiet sense of tranquility. Hands tenderly holding fragile objects, minimalist backgrounds that seem calm and grounded. But the more you look, the more her paintings reveal their emotional depth—a symphony of memory, trauma, and imagination unfolding before your eyes.

Lee describes herself as a painter of "psychological landscapes." Her art dives into the depths of human emotion, bringing forth latent memories—those buried under the weight of time or suppressed by the mind’s defenses. Rather than offering answers, her work creates a space for viewers to confront these fragile narratives, to ask questions, and to look inward.

One of her signature works, In the Middle of Life (2022), captures this interplay beautifully. A half-eaten slice of watermelon, a burnt incense stick, and precariously balanced wooden planks and stones sit together in unsettling harmony. These ordinary objects form a tableau of tension, as though caught in a moment outside of time. Within this fragile box-like structure, two figures cling to one another, their touch tender yet weighed down by the invisible burdens of shared memory.
The hands, so delicately rendered, seem to breathe with life. They evoke a quiet vulnerability, a meditation on isolation and connection. Around them, grass, twigs, and fragments of nature are meticulously painted, elevating the everyday into something sacred yet unsettling. These familiar elements, gathered in unexpected arrangements, resonate with dissonance—at once recognizable and alien.

For Lee, the ordinary is never just ordinary. Her work transforms familiar objects and spaces into gateways to reflection and discovery. She explains, “What we see is inherently subjective and incomplete. Even the smallest clues can expand our vision into a web of thoughts, memories, and emotions.” Her shaped and dimensional canvases further push the boundaries of perception, inviting viewers to experience her art not just visually, but physically.

이진주의 작품을 처음 마주하면 조용한 평화로움이 느껴집니다. 섬세하게 물체를 감싸고 있는 손, 미니멀한 배경 속에서 담담히 자리 잡은 장면들. 하지만 조금 더 가까이 들여다보면 그녀의 작품은 기억, 트라우마, 그리고 상상력이 엮인 정서적 복잡성을 보여주는 심포니처럼 다가옵니다.
